A boxer who represented Imo state Chukwuemeka Igboanugo at the National Sports Festival in Asaba died after he lost his bout in a technical knockout. The boxer in the bout received a punch in the chin from Anambra’s Gaby Amagor in their 86kg category, and the referee stops the bout.

 

Though the Delta State Government vowed to unravel what led to the death of a boxer representing Imo State, it was learnt that Chukwuemeka Igboanugo died after losing a fight in a knockout.

Eyewitness account revealed that “The boxer received a punch in his chin and the referee had to stop the fight when he failed to recover,”

“He was immediately taken out of the ring for medical treatment before being rushed to the hospital where he was confirmed dead,”

While confirming the death of the boxer, Commissioner for Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu said the cause of death as not been ascertained by the doctors.

According to Aniagwu, “You cannot say exactly what lead to the death until an autopsy is carried out and the report known. It is unfortunate that such happened to one of the participants” he said.

Meanwhile the mood at the camp of lmo state contingent looked suppressed owing to the calamity but the athletes have vowed to make sure they put the news of the untimely death behind them.
