Livid Over Vatican’s refusal to bless same-sex unions, Elton John accuses Vatican of ‘hypocrisy’

Sir Elton John has accused the Vatican of hypocrisy after it announced the Catholic Church could not bless same-sex unions.

Responding to the question of whether Catholic clergy can bless gay couples, the Vatican’s orthodoxy office, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, said ‘negative’.

However, Sir Elton, who has been happily married to David Furnish since 2014, was quick to call out the Vatican on Instagram.

The 73-year-old wrote: ‘How can the Vatican refuse to bless gay marriages because they ‘are sin’, yet happily make a profit from investing millions in Rocketman – a film which celebrates my finding happiness from my marriage to David?? #hypocrisy.’

Making sure his voice was heard, Sir Elton tagged the Catholic Church and Pope Francis, who approved the Vatican’s decree. The Vatican was said to have invested in both Rocketman and Men in Black: International, according to The Daily Beast.

Meanwhile, in its explanation on same-sex unions, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith said God ‘cannot bless sin’.

Their statement read: ‘The presence in such relationships of positive elements, which are in themselves to be valued and appreciated, cannot justify these relationships and render them legitimate objects of an ecclesial blessing since the positive elements exist within the context of a union not ordered to the Creator’s plan. ‘God does not and cannot bless sin: He blesses sinful man, so that he may recognise that he is part of his plan of love and allow himself to be changed by him,’ it concluded.
