House of Reps begins meeting with ASUU leadership

The meeting called to resolve the ongoing face-off between the Academic Staff Union of Universities and the Federal Government by the House of Representatives has begun.

The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, had during plenary on Tuesday confirmed the meeting.

Gbajabiamila said among those invited for the meeting were the leadership of ASUU, led by its President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, and key government officials.

Among the key government officials were the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed; Minister of Labour, Employment and Productivity, Chris Ngige; and Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu.

As at press time, the opening session, into which newsmen were allowed, had ended.

The meeting entered into a closes door session immediately after the preliminary remarks by those involved.

Recall that the lawyer to ASUU, Femi Falana (SAN), had hinted that the issues at stake may be resolved and the strike called off after the meeting called by Gbajabiamila.

According to reports reaching The Eagle Online, the meeting began at 3:49pm.
