It may officially be fall, but Hailey Bieber is still in a summer mindset. At least, the design of her dress was at last night’s Academy Museum Awards in Los Angeles. The model wore a slinky Saint Laurent gown that had a twisted strapless bustline—but it was the ab-exposing cutout at the stomach that turned heads.

Now, cutouts and body con silhouettes may be a spring-summer signature, but Bieber is clearly onto something by bringing it into the cooler months. The fall 2022 runways  last February also had tons of silhouettes that showed skin. At Off-White, the knits had circular cutouts all over them, while brands such as Nensi Dojaka, Supriya Lele, and Christopher Kane showed elegant dresses with cutouts at the hips. And by taking it to the red carpet and giving it a formal feel, Bieber proved the saucy look can even be quite polished and timeless looking. The look was classic, but with an unexpectedly cool edge—Bieber’s signature.
